Everything you need to know about bed bugs

The presence of bedbugs is independent of the cleanliness of the premises and affects all social classes. If bed bugs are detected, it is recommended to quickly call a specialized company. Here you find all the useful information.
Bedbugs are present all over the world. While they had disappeared from industrialized countries after the Second World War, they have been rapidly reappearing in the latter since the 1990s. The infestation of bedbugs is explained by several factors, in particular by the fact that today, people travel a lot more and that bedbugs are more resistant to insecticides. The presence of bedbugs is independent of the cleanliness of the premises and affects all social classes.

Bed bugs are flat, brownish-colored insects that range in size from 1 to 7 millimeters (about the size of an apple seed). They do not transmit disease to humans. They are active at night and feed on human or animal blood. Their bites are similar to those of mosquitoes and each person reacts to them differently. The bites are not dangerous but they can be itchy. Symptoms usually disappear one or two weeks after disinfestation.

Where are bedbugs found?

Bed bugs prefer places where they can easily hide away from light and bite regularly (bedrooms, sofas, etc.). They hide in very tight spaces, especially under wallpaper, behind picture frames, in baseboards, in power outlets, inside box springs, in mattress covers, bedside tables, curtains, carpets and suitcases. They are also found along the seams of mattresses.

Bed bugs do not fly or jump on people. They are in most cases passively transported in suitcases or handbags, on clothing, furniture or mattresses. In this way, they spread easily from one room to another. They can less frequently actively spread from one dwelling to another, most often through electrical installations or ventilation. Used clothing and furniture (mattresses and armchairs) can be infested with bed bugs.

What to do in case of an infestation?

A disinfestation company must be called in to put in place disinfestation measures. Insecticides must be applied by trained personnel because their effectiveness will depend on many factors such as the resistance of the insect to the product, the formulation, the method of dispersion. The products available on the market may not be effective and their use may endanger the health of the user. Close collaboration with professionals with expertise in the field of disinfestation is essential.

When getting rid of furniture and any other infested items, it is important to wrap them in a plastic bag and seal the edges with tape to prevent the spread of bedbugs by taking them to the dump. It is also important to put a sign on the item stating that it is infested with bed bugs.
